Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry / Sleep Dentistry Lincoln Park, Lakeview, ChicagoOften times, just the thought of going to the dentist can cause anxiety for some people. However, in skipping the dentist due to this dental phobia, you are neglecting your oral health, which will only hurt you in the long run. The anxiety and fear people feel when they need to go to the dentist is rather common. Fortunately, sedation dentistry exists to help ease the anxious feelings that accompany a dentist visit for some.

Sedation dentistry can be particularly beneficial for people who need more than just a routine check-up. This is not a type of anesthetic; for most procedures, you will need to still get local anesthetic, but utilizing the sedatives beforehand can alleviate much of your anxiety. With sedation dentistry, we will need a full medical history as well as current medications you are taking. We will call your prescription into the pharmacy prior to your pharmacy. You will need to bring the prescription to your appointment. DO NOT take it on your own. You will need to have someone pick you up from your appointment. You may NOT drive yourself or take an Uber or Lyft by yourself after the appointment.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Most people take advantage of sedation dentistry due to their dental phobia. However, there are also additional benefits. One main one is that it makes it seem like the procedures are much shorter than they actually are. Typically, one would not want to sit in the dentist’s chair for multiple hours; with sedation dentistry, it is easier to fit in major procedures in less appointments due to sedation. Also, you can feel comfortable actually going through with a longer procedure that you need or want because you will not have to deal with the anxiety you have. Finally, your oral health will improve because you will have less of a fear of going to the dentist.

How Does Dental Sedation Work?

The Dental Professionals of Lincoln Park offer sedation dentistry to patients in Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Chicago. Sedation dentistry is when the dentist administers a drug during or before a procedure to help patients feel more relaxed.

  • Oral Sedatives: These help patients relax during a procedure. You’ll take them about an hour prior to your appointment and will be totally awake, but not as anxious.  It’s possible to feel sleepy and you might not remember a lot about the actual procedure once it’s done.

Is Sedation Dentistry Dangerous?

Each person reacts differently to sedation dentistry and the type of medication used by the Dental Professionals of Lincoln Park.  The dental staff will monitor patients closely during the procedure to ensure everything goes according to plan with the sedation. In general, it’s a safe procedure, but with any anesthesia and even with extremely close monitoring, there can be some risks.

There are a lot of restrictions on dental professionals due to the possible dangers of sedating medications. Dentists have to undergo extensive training and follow strict rules. They also must have certain emergency equipment on hand just in case something goes wrong. At Dental Professionals of Lincoln Park, we are fully equipped to offer these services to our patients in Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Chicago.
