If you’ve been seeing a dentist in Lakeview or Lincoln Park regularly, you probably already know what foods are best avoided to get the picture-perfect smile you want. Over time, sugary drinks and foods can damage your tooth enamel and cause decay. In recognition of National Nutrition Month, we’d like to highlight some of the nutrients responsible for healthy teeth—and where you can find them!
Calcium
If you’re of a certain age, you may remember the ad campaigns that taught us milk helps build strong bones. This is true for teeth as well! A diet that includes varied sources of calcium achieves this best. Pick some favorites from the list below:
- Low-fat dairy milk, cheese, yogurt
- Collard greens, kale, and spinach
- Sardines and canned salmon
- Tofu and fortified soy beverages
- Phosphorus
Less well-known as a calcium source but just as important, phosphorus can be found in many of the same foods (dairy in particular). It’s important to incorporate both for a gap-free diet. Try adding some of these foods to a meal:
- Chicken, turkey, pork, seafood, and organ meats
- Sunflower seeds, nuts, and pumpkin seeds
- Whole grain foods, amaranth, and quinoa
- Lentils and beans
Vitamin C
In addition to helping keep your teeth healthy, vitamin C supports gum health. This vitamin is easy to get from citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, and beyond), but it’s important to rinse their acidic juices down with water so they do not wear on your enamel. You can also try:
- Broccoli, kale, mustard spinach, and Brussels sprouts
- Papaya, strawberries, kiwis, and guava
- Sweet yellow peppers and chili peppers
- Parsley and thyme
